Bucheon Crash: Driver Confesses Pedal Mistake

A 60-year-old driver involved in a truck incident at Bucheon Jeil Market, which resulted in four deaths and 18 injuries, was handed over to prosecutors while in custody.

The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Department reported on the 21st that they have detained and submitted a 67-year-old individual for violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Management, facing charges of causing death and injury.

A is charged with causing a 1-ton truck to crash into Jeil Market in Wonjong-dong, Ojeong-gu, Bucheon City on the morning of the 13th, resulting in four deaths and 18 injuries.

His vehicle moved backward 1–2 meters moments before the collision and then sped forward for 132 meters, repeatedly striking people and market stands.

The “pedal black box” within the truck, which documents pedal and brake actions, recorded A pressing the accelerator rather than the brake at the moment of the accident.

On the 15th, during an interrogation of a suspect prior to arrest (warrant review), A mentioned a link to the accident, saying, “My Moyamoya disease is very serious.” However, during a follow-up police investigation, he admitted it was an error caused by incorrect use of the pedals. He also mentioned that the symptoms of Moyamoya disease did not impact his driving.

The total number of people affected by this accident is 22, which includes four fatalities, seven severe injuries, and 11 minor injuries. Recently, with one more minor injury case, the total number of casualties rose to 22 from the previous count of 21.

The victims primarily consisted of 19 pedestrians and three market vendors moving between stalls. All four of the deceased were also pedestrians.

The authorities determined it was a ‘pedal error’ following a thorough examination of surveillance video, the pedal data recorder, and the suspect’s statements.
